Last week, on May 18th, 2020, Broward County, FL joined the list of other counties and municipalities across the U.S. that are “back to business” and initiated the Phase 1 of reopening procedures.
According to the Governor Ron DeSantis Executive Order 20-120, personal grooming services are allowed to reopen under Broward’s Phase One reopening strategy. This of course requires some planning and preparation from both the business owners as well as their patrons to maintain the safety of all involved.
Salons Were Part of the Phase 1 Reopening of Broward County
Small business owners in Oakland Park, FL along with its neighboring communities completed their first week of Broward Phase 1 reopening procedures. Recently, I chatted with Autumn Markley, owner of Autumn Markley Salon Studio located in neighboring Wilton Manors, FL. Autumn’s salon has four stylists and is a boutique salon that caters to all types of hair colors, cuts, and extensions.
Before the ordered shutdown in Mid-March 2020, Autumn Markley Salon Studio’s services included anything from haircuts, color, styling; specialty colors such as balayage and airtouch, as well as several types of extensions. During Phase 1 re-opening the salon is trying to serve their clients as best as possible: “We are catering to our haircuts and color clients, as well as maintenance appointments for existing extension clients and consultation appointments for new extension clients.”
Barbicide-19 Certification: An Essential Training for Industry Professionals
As for what was included in the planning and preparing for the reopening of her salon, Autumn states that all of her staff members have taken, and certified in the Barbicide-19 training. From barbicide.com, this program is designed to present the most current information that is pertinent to the Professional Beauty Professional.
This information changes daily, but the guidelines for the Professional Beauty industry are likely to remain consistent in the short term. All rules and guidance of individual states must be followed.
“We also have hand sanitizer and barbicide disinfectant at all stations. Our staff is also complying with all government requirements, and all clients are required to sign a health waiver, wear a mask, and take their temperature upon arrival”, affirms Autumn.
Rising Costs to run a business during Covid-19
Another point to note is that small business owners across the nation are seeing an increase in the cost for some of the products they need to run their business. Thankfully, for the clients of Autumn Markley Salon Studio, this increase won’t heavily affect the prices of her services.
“Yes, we have heavily increased our purchasing amounts for sanitation and protection supplies to keep our staff and clients safe, but this doesn’t affect our current pricing this is just the cost of doing business in this day and age. My main interest is that my staff and clients feel safe and comfortable,” she says.
What To Expect When Scheduling Your Next Appointment
So that being said…what is the process for a new or existing client to make an appointment?
Well, they are as follows:
- Call or text 954-303-6499 to speak with their salon manager, Thea.
- Upon arrival, you’re asked to remain in your vehicle and communicate with the salon that you have arrived; they will let you know when they’re ready for you to come in.
- Your temperature will be taken before entering the salon.
- Once inside the salon, you will be asked to fill out a health waiver.
- Lastly, the salon kindly requests the client go to the washroom to wash their hands before proceeding to their stylist’s chair, where you should remain for the duration of your appointment.
