Where to Go for Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo 2021 is nearly here! While many sipped homemade margaritas on their porches last year, people are starting to feel more confident about safely venturing out. With more restaurants having safety measures down and a large population freshly vaccinated, many are ready to party this year. Here is a list of ways to celebrate around or near town. Don’t drink? Don’t worry, we have that covered too.

Get Ready to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo!

Tequila Sunrise Mexican Grill

Tequila Sunrise, located at 4711 N Dixie Highway, Oakland Park, will hold a block party beginning at 11:30 am, which will feature live music, two bars, and a mariachi band. Be sure to catch the Leo Lee Rock band perform.

Perhaps you would prefer more of a street vibe? Then you can head over to Wilton Manors and join The 2021 Cinco De Mayo Street Food & Drink Festival hosted by La Mexicana Taco Bar, located at 2430 NE 13th Ave Wilton Manors. There will be a free all-day music event featuring beer models, giveaways, and tons of margaritas.

Tatts & Tacos Beer Garden

Tatts and Tacos is located at 3200 NE 12th Ave, Oakland Park. Typically, Tatts and Tacos would host a block party; this year, it will be scaled back. While there will be no block party, they will be having tequila specials, shot girls, and live DJs throughout the day.

Virtual Margarita Recipe Swap at Home

Don’t feel like partying with the masses quite yet? No worries! You can still host virtual Cinco de Mayo celebrations with friends and family. It would be a great time to swap your favorite margarita recipes and see who comes up with the best one! After one or two, you’re sure to be the winner.

Speaking of staying home, with today’s plethora of delivery companies, you can bring the taste of Mexico right to your home. Try ordering your favorites from a local Oakland Park Mexican restaurant such as Quates Mexican Restaurant or Alegria Tacos.

Missing a Local Favorite?

Cielito Lindo is still remodeling due to a fire and will not participate in this year’s festivities or be open for take-out. However, I was assured that their Pompano location will be up and running and taking all of your DoorDash, GrubHub, and UberEats orders!

Which leads me to the next event: what can I do if I don’t drink?

Fun Mexican-Style Activities

Many sober señores and señoritas like to take the time to meet up on or near the beach. Soak up the Florida sun and dip your feet in the water with friends and family or take the opportunity to play a traditional Mexican game with your family at home. Here’s a fun list to try with your friends or children: https://www.donquijote.org/mexican-culture/traditions/games-mexico/

No matter what you decide to do this Cinco De Mayo, please be safe, have fun and sip those margaritas responsibly. Ole!
