On Sunday, October 11th, at 11:33AM, Rhiannon Samoyedny, one of Living In Oakland Park’s senior writers, posted in the Facebook group: “Bad accident happening now. Commercial and 6th. Intersection is closed. Tire kingdom sign was taken out. Looks like they are trying to get someone out of the vehicle“. Below is one of the pictures from her post:

While it may have seemed that BSO was trying to get someone out of the car, in fact, the driver, 35 year old Brazilian national, Ricardo Freitas da Silva, had been ejected from the vehicle during the accident. It is not clear if Silva was wearing seat belt.

According to the report released by BSO at 8:30am on Sunday October 11, 2020 traffic homicide detectives responded to a call at 600 East Commercial Blvd in Oakland Park (corner of NE 6th Ave and Commercial Blvd).

Car Crashes Into Concrete Pole

When detective arrived on the scene they found that a black 2012 Chevy Traverse had crashed into a concrete utility pole and then hit the sign of the Tire Kingdom located on the same corner as the crash.

Da Silva, who according to detectives was driving disproportionately fast in an eastward direction on Commercial Boulevard, swerved off the road and struck a concrete utility pole on the southeast corner of the intersection. The vehicle then rotated counter clockwise striking a tree and the Tire Kingdom sign on the swale. The vehicle stopped in the parking lot of the Tire Kingdom but not before ejecting Ricardo from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Broward Sheriff’s deputies from Oakland Park and Oakland Park Fire Rescue were the first responders on the site of the crash.

While still in the preliminary stages, traffic homicide detectives’ initial investigation indicates that speeding contributed to factor to the fatal outcome of this accident.
