On Wednesday March 9, BSO released information regarding the arrest of 18 year old Jonathan Yuz. He was arrested in relation to a December car crash that cost the lives of a mother and a son.

According to BSO traffic homicide investigators, the incident occurred a little after 5:30PM on December 31, 2020. The investigators revealed that Yuz was traveling east in the center thru lane on Commercial Boulevard in a 2020 Porsche Taycan 4s. Another adult male, eventually one of the victims of the crash, was at the same time traveling westbound in a 2021 BMW 3301 with two other passengers in the car, a juvenile male and an adult female, and attempting to turn south on NE 15th Ave. As he turned, he was struck by Yuz in a t-bone style collision which spun both vehicles.

Illegal U-turn Results in Death

According to detectives, the BMW spun onto the sidewalk on the other side of the road, hitting a light pole on the driver’s side. The BMW eventually came to a final rest halfway on the sidewalk and halfway on the roadway. Yuz’s vehicle spun and eventually stopped perpendicular to the eastbound lanes.

Detectives discovered that Yuz made an illegal U-turn and was driving 80 MPH just before impact. The speed limit in the area is 35 MPH.

Both BSO and Oakland Park Fire Rescue responded to the scene of the crash. Drivers of both the Porsche and BMW, as well as the passengers of the BMW, were all transported to local hospitals. The female passenger of the BMW was pronounced deceased just hours later at 8:45PM.

On Jan. 15, 2022, the juvenile passenger of the BMW, who had been airlifted to a Wisconsin hospital on January 11th, was pronounced deceased.

Driver Taken Into Custody

On March 7, 2022, detectives concluded their investigation and a warrant for Yuz’s arrest was issued.

On March 8, 2022 detectives located Yuz and took him into custody. He is charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, one count of reckless driving causing injury and two counts of reckless driving causing property damage.

This is a threefold tragedy. A family lost a mother and a son. And Yuz, while still living and breathing, faces charges that will certainly cost him his life in a more figurative way.

Every time any of us gets into a car we make decisions that can potentially affect others and put ourselves in a position to be victims of others’ decisions. Driving is riskier than so many other daily activities. That being said, I would like to leave you with these words of wisdom: it is better to lose a minute in life than your life in a minute
