Amy Johnson, owner of Sea Salt Fish Market, says their tacos, which are filled with nearly ½ lb of fresh fish or shrimp, cabbage, romaine lettuce, Roma tomatoes, red onion, and two house-made sauces: cumin lime crema and chipotle aioli, have “a kind of cult following and are a fan favorite.” If you order shrimp or Mahi tacos on Tuesdays, your fourth taco is free!
The Story Behind the Idea
Amy grew up in Nebraska and always loved fishing. Being in a landlocked state, Amy did a lot of lake and river fishing with her grandpa. Then, in her adult life, Amy worked a corporate career that allowed her to travel. She recalls viewing ports and visiting fish markets in countries all over the Mediterranean and Almalfi coast and thinking to herself, “When I retire, I’d like to open something like this.”
Thankfully, Amy didn’t wait for retirement. In December 2017, she opened Sea Salt Fish Market, bringing some of the freshest, not farmed, not frozen, fish to Broward County.
What Makes the Sea Salt Fish Market Different
Johnson explains that one way Sea Salt Fish Market is different from other seafood markets is that the fish they are receiving is coming in one day and sold the same day or the next day. Everything they sell is placed on the shelves and sold to customers within 24 hours. “The idea is to keep bringing in fish so that customers get something that was just swimming”, she says.
Not only is the food extremely fresh, but orders can be customized to your liking. While preparing custom orders for customers, the market works hard to minimize product waste. “We do our own butchering so if a customer doesn’t want the tail, we can smoke it and make our own salmon burgers. Our commercial kitchen allows us to minimize waste which is great for animals and great for keeping costs as low as possible.”
Sea Salt Fish Market works directly with local South Florida fishermen and fisheries to provide their customers with the freshest, locally-sourced seafood.
