Motorcyclists Body Found

Today BSO reported that just before 10am on Thursday May 26th, a maintenance crew working off of Federal Highway in Dania found the body of motorcyclist. The workers were mowing the grass near the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport when they saw the victim laying motionless on the ground. BSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to the scene.

A motorcyclist was later identified as 26 year old, Oakland Park Resident Mario Velasquez Castillo.

The initial investigation has revealed that Castillo was driving a 2004 Yamaha YZF-R1 and traveling north on Federal Highway. Near the airport, for unknown reasons, he left the roadway, traveled down and through the grass swale, continued across the embankment where he crashed into a tree. Castillo came to a final stop at the bottom of the embankment where the collision caused the motorcycle to break in half and catch fire.

Excessive Speed as Possible Cause

So far the investigation has revealed no evidence of any other vehicles being involved in the fatal collision. Based on the damage, investigators believe excessive speed may have been a contributing factor to this fatality.
