Speeding Possible Cause of Fatal Car Crash in Oakland Park

On Monday October 4, 2021 at around 9:46 AM Regional Communications for BSO received a call reporting a two vehicle collision that had occurred in the residential area of Royal Palm Isles  around the 1900 block of NW 38th Street.

The crash occurred when the driver of a 2010 Nissan Versa, traveling westbound on NW 38th Street in the eastbound lane and  allegedly at excessive speed hit a 2016 Chevrolet Express. The Chevrolet Express was parked on the swale of south side of NW 38th facing east.

The Nissan Versa hit the Chevrolet Express in an offset head-on style collision. As a result of the impact the Versa rotated counterclockwise before coming to a complete stop. The Chevrolet Express was pushed backwards before coming to a final stop. Both drivers sustained severe injuries.

Drivers Transported to Nearby Hospitals

BSO Oakland Park District Deputies and Oakland Park Fire Rescue responded to the scene. OPFR  transported both drivers to local area hospitals. The driver of the Nissan Versa was pronounced deceased upon arrival at Broward Health Medical Center.  The condition of the driver of the Chevrolet Express who sustained critical injuries is not known at this time.

Excessive Speed: A Current Problem in Oakland Park

Investigators believe that excessive speed by the driver of the Nissan Versa to be a major contributing factor to this crash.

This fatality due to excessive speed is at least the second one in Oakland Park in the last two months. The other fatality occurred late in the evening on August 21, 2021 when a small car crashed into a BMW right in front of the entrance to the Whispering Lakes neighborhood off of Prospect Road. The small caught fire and the driver lost their life.

Residents voiced their concerns to City officials regarding the plethora of accidents on Prospect Road as a result of speeding. A meeting is being scheduled to address these concerns but after this fatality it may indeed be necessary to expand the scope of the area which will be addressed at this up and coming meeting.
