BSO Arrests Man For Shooting at 7-11 in Oakland Park

Altercation at 7-11 Escalates Into Shooting

On June 6, 2022 BSO responded to a call regarding a shooting at the 7-11 on the northeast corner of Andrews and NE 38t St. When deputies arrived they found an adult male that had been shot in the face. Paramedics took him to the hospital where he was treated, and miraculously survived the . 

Investigators pulled surveillance footage and ascertained that the shooter and the victim had been exchanging words. The shooter wielded a machete at some point and then got in his car and feigned driving away. He is later seen exiting his car, walking up to the victim, whose name has been withheld, and shot him point blank in the face.

BSO Release Video to Identify Shooter

On July 22nd, BSO’s Office Violent Crimes Unit detectives released the unedited surveillance footage to the public. They asked for the public’s help in identifying the shooter. This strategy coupled with continued investigation led detectives to identify the suspected shooter as 22 year old, Luis Alberto Escolástico Canela, a resident of Oakland Park. Deputies issued an arrest warrant for Escolástico after he was identified. 

Shooter Arrested and Charged with First Degree Attempted Felony Murder

Six days later, on Thursday, July 28, BSO’s Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response (V.I.P.E.R.) team investigators assisted in arresting Escolástico in North Lauderdale. He is facing a 1st degree attempted murder charge.  If convicted of first degree attempted murder, Escolástico faces could be convicted to life in prison.
