Oakland Park Fire Rescue Responds to Smoke Alarm at Post Office

On Saturday, December 12th, at 10:38 P.M. Oakland Park Fire Rescue responded to a smoke alarm at the Oakland Park Post Office, located at 3550 NE 12th Ave, Oakland Park.

Smoke Alarm at Post Office

Fire Rescue was quickly able to determine that a small fire started in a dropbox in the lobby, which is open to the public for drop-offs during evening hours. There was no structure or smoke damage to the building, a spokesperson from Oakland Park Fire Rescue confirmed.

The bin pictured above was outside of the post office when Living in Oakland Park reporters arrived on the scene and is possibly the bin in question. At the time the photo was taken, there were no visible signs of smoke or flames. A member of the Living In Oakland Park Facebook group noted: “I just got back from the post office, and it’s just fine, no signs of a fire”, said Ronnie Damian Rodriguez.

Letters Possibly Damaged

It is possible that a small number of letters that were also in the dropbox may have also been damaged. The cause of the fire is under investigation and it will take investigators time to determine the cause. The post office is up and running as usual on Monday morning, which is a sigh of relief to many in one of the busiest mail seasons in recorded history.

One member of the Living in Oakland Park Facebook Group showed concern for their mail during one of the busiest mailing seasons of all time.  “I just mailed all of the Christmas cards out”, said Will Williamson. If you are concerned, like Williamson,  that your mail was affected, you can contact the United States Post Office via phone or email at https://www.usps.com/help/contact-us.htm.
