5 Badass Things About City Park

Oakland Park’s City Park may be one of the most anticipated and bipartisan projects coming down the city’s pike. A model example of the city’s development and vision for the city’s future. The site of City Park will be the Collins community center 3900 NE 3rd Avenue, Oakland Park, FL 33334.

The City Park Project has been a long time in the making. It is one of the major renovation projects that will be paid for through the $40 million dollar bond taxpayers approved. The bond was passed in order to update all of the City’s facilities including the are which is now the Collins Community Center. At meetings held by the City the public has had an opportunity to share their ideas about what the site should be like. Their ideas have been taken into consideration so that the resulting project is one that is relevant and can be enjoyed by Oakland Park residents.

It is a badass project to say the least and in this article we explore 5 of the most badass things about it!

5 Badass Things About City Park

It doesn’t eat green space

That’s right! None of Wimberly Field existing green space will be compromised. The city plans on replacing the outdated fire station and utilities building and parking lot to house the library, community center, and outdoor amenities.

Multi-generational

Can you say pickleball, basketball and a splash pad? The community really came together on the outdoor spaces to bring multi-generational spaces to fruition. Talk about listening to the residents’ voices. The outdoor space will boast all of the above, with plenty of browsable green space in between.

Great use of bond money

The pickle ball courts, basketball court and splash pad are in 90% completion. The city is already seeking support for a 200,000k grant for these outdoor facilities, which will help supplement the project’s other amenities such as flexible childcare/adult work/play spaces which are modular, changeable and futuristic.

A New Library

Who wouldn’t be excited about a state-of-the-art library modeled after some of the best in the country? Some of the inspiration comes from the nation’s finest models, such as the Austin Central Library, Texas. This new library will have books but it will have so much more so that it, like the sports fields, has a multi-generational appeal.

Location, location, location

Situated smack dab in the middle of the East coast/West Coast OP debate, sits City Park. Also a stone’s throw from Wilton Manors aging library. It is situated so that it will attract residents from both the east and west sides of the City bringing a much needed renewal to the heart of Oakland Park.

In short, the city of Oakland Park stands divided between development and non-development. This is one project, just short of preserving our only waterfront property, that residents should learn about and support. This project will be transformative for the City and its residents so it is important that all who will enjoy it be a part of that transformation.
