Winter Wellness: Essential Oils Can Help You!
Let’s talk winter wellness and ways for you to boost your immune system to stay healthy this season.
We all get nervous come fall for the dreaded flu season. Well, I am here to share some natural ways to help you not be so nervous. A big culprit in these fall and winter months is due to lack of sun light, constant running around from all the holidays, extra sugar intake and the unavoidable family stress that some of us have. It simply wears us down and we become more susceptible to germs. Simple ways to boost your immune system can make all the difference.
Let’s Learn a Little About Essential Oils!
A huge part of my family’s wellness regimen is based on essential oils. I know, it’s a hot topic and even a little confusing, but it doesn’t need to be. They have been used in many cultures for centuries, and thankfully America is finally getting back to that.
So why do we want to use essential oils to help our bodies? Essential oils are organic compounds extracted from plants that have therapeutic properties. They are the life blood of the plant, and when these plants are grown, harvested, and distilled properly and with the utmost care, they can aid in keeping our bodies healthy, which is how it was intended to be. Essential oils are composed of molecules so tiny they easily pass through our tissue and go directly into our cells. Our systems are so effective that we transport these molecules all over our bodies within minutes. This is why they work so well to help keep our bodies healthy.
The Wellness Keepers
This is my family’s daily routine or as daily as I can make it considering I have 3 kids. Let’s dive in.
Thieves essential oil blend is our first line of defense. It is a powerful blend of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary. I always have a wellness roller on hand made with Thieves, Frankincense, Oregano & Copaiba. We apply it daily to the bottom of our feet and down the spine. You can also diffuse for added support when needed, or just enjoy the yummy fall smell. Thieves is perfect for boosting your immune system and keeping those germs at bay.
Vitamin C is one of the most important vitamins due to its role as an immune booster. Studies show that consuming more vitamin C can increase your blood antioxidant levels by up to 30%. This helps the body’s natural defense fight inflammation and free radicals that can cause sickness.
Vitamin D is one of the most common vitamin deficiencies. In fact, nearly everyone is low in this very important vitamin. Yes, even us in South Florida. I spend my days outside with my kids and found out I was very deficient. Who knew! So why is Vitamin D so important for wellness? It reduces your risk of infectious disease by strengthening your innate immune system. Vitamin D turns on key peptides in your immune system that trigger a strong anti-microbial response, allowing you to quickly and effectively fight off invaders before they can develop into a full-blown infection.
Probiotics are very important in our wellness regimen because a majority of our immune system resides in our gut. Think of the sayings “trust your gut” or “gut instinct”. Our bodies have so many receptors in our gut that feed the brain and our immune system. Probiotics help deliver “good” bacteria back into your digestive system to keep it working optimally. This is why excellent gut health is crucial.
Ningxia Red is an antioxidant drink unlike any other. It is made up of wolfberries, Orange, Yuzu, Lemon, and Tangerine essential oils that contain powerful constituent d-limonenealong with blueberry, aronia, cherry, pomegranate, and plum juices It’s a whole body nutrient infusion. This is the easiest way for me to get antioxidants in my kids. They love this drink! We drink about 2 ounces each day unless we start to feel something coming on.
Elderberry syrup is a daily during the flu season only or unless we need a boost. Then, I’ll make some during the year. Homemade elderberry is unlike store bought. It’s less sweet and more tangy in the best way. Did you know Elderberry is proven to kill the flu virus? It is! Elderberry enhances cytokine production, delivers antioxidants and is a viral suppressant. Cytokines are small chemicals in our body that allow our immune system to work correctly, and a recent study shows the elderberry extract can somehow stain and coat the exterior of a virus, rendering the virus non-functional. Yes please!
Colloidal Silver, either you’ve heard of it or have no idea what it is. Colloidal Silver is a water that has suspended microscopic silver particles in it. Silver is antimicrobial, meaning that it can kill harmful microbes. We use the nose spray for the kids first sign of runny nose or respiratory cold. Bonus information: it’s great to use to clean a cut or wound.
Eucalyptus essential oil works really well to support the respiratory system. The oil reacts with mucous membranes, not only reducing mucus but helping loosen it so that you can cough it up. You can either rub it on your chest and throat with a little carrier oil like coconut oil or add it to a bowl of hot water for an easy way to breath it in.
If Your Body is Strong, the Virus Becomes Weak
We have to retrain to know that it’s less about the virus and more about the terrain the virus enters. This means the virus your body comes in contact with is only as strong as your body is weak. We are taught to fear the virus. Instead each day we must take measures to make our body strong and resistant to these viruses.
