This article was compiled from the FAQs from the City of Oakland Park in order to clarify some of the most common questions. Of course you will probably have many more questions. In that case contact the Building & Permitting Division directly. See the bottom of this article for their contact information and hours.

Can a resident do work inside their home without a building permit if it doesn’t exceed a certain dollar amount?

No. A building permit is required for any new work.

Can a homeowner apply for their own building permit?

As long as the homeowner meets the exemption requirement provided for in the State Statute 489.103(7) (a) they can apply for their own permit .

The homeowner is required to submit the building permit application in person. They must also certify compliance by reading and understanding the Owner/Builder Affidavit and Disclosure Statement. This type of permitting is recommended for small, miscellaneous jobs such as fences and walkways. Larger jobs are more complex and the homeowner should consider hiring an experienced contractor in order to avoid issues.
