Cinco de Mayo

As a result of the unchecked European quest for empire in the late 19th century, the French invaded Mexico under the pretext of collecting overdue debts. The mighty French empire went to Mexico guns blazing, fully confident of their ability to subdue the Mexicans and get their money. But the French were not to be victorious on Cinco de Mayo.

As the French marched on the Mexican capital they were halted in the city of Puebla by the smaller Mexican forces. And that is what happened on Cinco de Mayo.

While the Mexicans won that fateful Cinco de Mayo, 1862, ultimately the French occupied Mexico. They installed a monarchy that lasted just four years. The monarchy collapsed and the rest is history.

Cinco de Mayo In the United States

Cinco de Mayo was popular with Mexicans in the late 1870s, which is when  they imported the holiday to the United States. Over the years its popularity has waned in Mexico, while gaining ground in the United States

In good ol’ American fashion Americans have taken this celebration to new levels with some cities even holding a Running of the Chihuahuas competition!

The City of Oakland Park is no exception. In grand, or should I say grande?, Cinco de Mayo style local establishments are having parties and food and drink specials all weekend long! The only thing we are missing, hint hint, is our very own Running of the Chihuahuas.
